Heading into the fall those of us who own horses, whether they be mares or stallions, need to start making plans and preparations to protect these prized animals from the harsh winter elements

Do you own a horse? Then now is the time to start planning for the winter. Remember, your horse will start having his or her coat begin to grow longer over the next few weeks. This natural occurrence is not caused by increased cool weather but rather your horse’s reaction to the days beginning to have fewer and fewer hours of daylight.

That being said, you need to start thinking about whether or not you’re going to allow your horse’s coat to grow long this winter. If you do not plan to compete during the winter months or show your horse competitively than choosing not to clip your horse’s coat is a option. Of course, if you’re on the other end and do choose to clip your horse’s coat over the winter then you are going to need to protect him from the cold properly.

A solid turnout rug made from synthetic and durable construction and designed specifically for the cool weather will be just what you need in order to keep your horse warm and safe from the cold. If you live in a more temperate climate such as the South then you may not need to get a full-blown winter horse rug but instead might be able to get away with just turnout rug.

If you don’t have one already then you might want to start shopping online for good horse rug or stable blanket now before quantities become limited and you might not be able to get the style that you’ve looking for.
